• Gods in Alabama was the book I picked for the Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge for this month. The challenge was to read a book from the backlist of new favorite author and having recently discovered Joshilyn Jackson I decided to go with another one of her books. I read The Almost Sisters in August and loved it so I felt in the mood for more southern fiction.
  GIA gave me feels that were very Fried Green Tomatoes. Very Southern, at times relatable and definitely quirky-funny, but it is also dark and full of sinister secrets. I liked Arlene and most of the characters for that matter, but everyone is messed up. I don’t just mean your everyday messed up but semi-normal, I mean girl has got some issues! You know she’s hiding a secret from everyone and you will take guesses throughout most of the book but you will more than likely be wrong.
  This book is full of twists, which I don’t mind, but I was occasionally confused and had to re-read a paragraph or two just to re situate myself. There were times I felt like there were too many issues being bandied about to deal with all at once but overall this was still a really good fictional novel.
• Arlene Fleet is a graduate student in Chicago, Illinois, who suspects that her boyfriend is about to propose to her...until he overhears a phone conversation with her aunt and suspects that she might be ashamed of him, as she's never taken him home to meet her family. He demands that she attend the party her aunt is trying to harangue her into going home for, and that she take him with her. A fight ensues. In the midst of it, a girl from Arlene's Alabama hometown shows up on Arlene's doorstep asking questions about a guy named Jim Beverly, and suddenly the book isn't a romantic comedy anymore, because Arlene knows exactly where--or, more accurately, what--Jim Beverly is, and that's dead. The rest of the book follows Arlene and Burr as they head down to Alabama to throw Rose Mae off Jim's trail, though Burr doesn't know that's the real purpose of the trip. Arlene is trying to work up the guts to tell him, but faced with everything against her, it's not exactly easy.
  
  I thought I was absolutely going to love this book up until the last chapter. Five stars, all the way. The writing is phenomenal, and I can completely imagine Arlene, her crazy family, Rose Mae Lolley, Burr, and the small town of Possett, Alabama. I loved the multi-faceted way in which she portrayed not only Arlene, the grad student, good Southern Baptist girl, slut, and murderer, but also Jim Beverly, who could protect his girlfriend from her abusive father and usher a girl to the nurse's office so she doesn't have to be embarrassed by having blood all over her pants, but also turn into a violent drunk. Arlene and Burr's relationship was very real, with conflicts and bumps and moments when you think it might be over, but always lasting because they really and truly do know each other. I loved the way Burr dealt with Arlene's crazy, mostly-racist family, and I was really loving the book in general.
  
  And then there was that last chapter. See, in the last chapter, Jackson pretty much unravels the gorgeous narrative she had built up until that point. I was expecting a House of Sand and Fog-type ending, and I would have been okay with that. That's not the way this goes, though. In the end, everyone gets away with what they've done, Jim is a monster after all, Arlene and her family are reconciled, and she and Burr presumably live happily ever after. It's just too perfect. Murder doesn't end that way. Or, it does, sometimes, but very, very rarely. Arlene & Co. are just primed to be starring on an episode of Cold Case 25 years from now. That last chapter knocked a couple of stars off my rating of this one. A more "flawed" ending for Arlene & Co. would have been more satisfying, I think; heart-wrenching, yes, but I think Jackson could have pulled it off if she tried. She just didn't try.

• This book is a winner on so many levels. It’s a provocative, smart, surprising, sad, happy, tragic, funny tale of a Southern Baptist family with a secret so big nobody knows the whole truth until ten years of denial and deals made with God have been kept. I can’t wait to read all of Joshilyn Jackson’s other books. The writing is beautiful and the characters are beloved. There was never a lull and I couldn’t put it down.

• Wow.... That first line got me
  "There are gods in Alabama.... I left one under the kudzu to rot..."
  This book had mystery, a bit of humor and Southern ties. It had universal truths all teens share and look back on years later knowing how it molded us to who we are or thought we were. It also had a few twists to keep the truth a bit of a surprise. I didn't just read it. I felt it all.
• If you have not read this book, honestly you are missing out on a fantastic novel. Far easier to read than Dostoevsky but packing some serious story power and insight into America on multiple dimensions including the pressures on adolescents to achieve, race relations in which the author refreshingly pulls no punches, and faith, I cannot think of a novel that I have read in the past decade that really is this good.
  
  Many books you read them, enjoy the ending you saw coming the moment you picked up the book, and other than "that was nice" there is nothing to really think about. This book, the more you think about it the more you may discover, and honestly that richness of vivid storytelling and fidelity in the setting lend a masterful touch to a story that is at times disquietingly real while at the same time being artfully paced to not overwhelm the reader. If you have not read this book, you should.
• Gods in Alabama was a great book with excellent characters who put all their flaws and idiosyncrasies on display for the world to behold....Joshlyn Jackson kept me interested until the very last word all the while building to an ending that I never expected or anticipated....She built this story around the traditional Southern roots of family, fortitude, and forgiveness....I highly recommend this book especially to the Southerners out there who love Southern literature.....you won’t be disappointed!

• It's good for a refresher
• This is an ideal series of manuscripts for a small business owner who is looking to be more involved in their accounting and financial practices. The author demonstrates a lot of knowledge and experience in accounting with an introduction to GAAP and its governing board(s). To add a bit on GAAP and why follow these principles...
  
  GAAP is a set of standard principles for the practice of accounting. GAAP compliance is important because it standardizes terminology and approach, and offers consistency in reporting and tracking for quicker and more accurate decision-making activities.
  
  One of the helpful aspects of the manuscript are the analogies to help illustrate concepts. Such as, "Two Sides of the Accounting Coin" in reference to making sure transactions balance. And there are handy examples through the text.
  
  If you have taken a college course or two some time ago such as Accounting or Finance, this will be a good refresher. If you are a working professional in this area, this will be a quick read. If you are a small business owner looking to get more hands-on in your business accounting and financial operations, you will want to set aside a couple of hours to go through a chapter, apply the concept to your business, and reference back when you need to. You may want to go through this guide in more than one sitting.

• As a tax professional with an accounting degree, a big chunk of my life is spent interacting with small business owners who have an entrepreneurial spark, but know nothing, really, about accounting although they think they do. Needless to say, they are a source of trouble and frustration in my profession, because they don't really understand what accounting is supposed to do, much less how it is supposed to be done, and too many of them don't provide me with the kind of financial reporting that makes tax preparation accurate and as easy as anything that involves thousands of pages of government regulations!
  
  These entrepreneurs would do well to read these three books by Greg Shields Accounting Principles, Financial Accounting, and Management Accounting. They explain, in short and concise chapters, what accounting is and how it works. Even if it only allows entrepreneurs to speak the language their accountant uses, or convinces them that they need an accountant in the first place, it would be worth it.
  
  My only objection is that sometimes Mr. Shield's writes like an accountant. He is technically accurate and understandable, but no poet. In one chapter, he compares basic accounting rules to what appear to be U.S. Army regulations, as if that would be a comparison that would make sense to most people, rather than the relatively small percentage of the population who have military experience. I thought was a strange choice, even if it wasn't so obscure as to be impossible to understand.
  
  But that is quibbling. In fact, if you want a short and compact, but 100% accurate, accounting tutorial, these books by Greg Shields have my recommendation.
• Another awesome resource from Greg Shields. Not only does he provide an overview of what financial and management accounting are but he also points out why each are used and any limitations. In this book, you will find all the business analysis tools (ratios) you will ever need for cashflow, solvency, liquidity, leverage, activity, and more! He explains which ratios to use and why and the limitations of each one. He even breaks down each of the financial statements and gives their purpose, how to set them up, and how to analyze. In addition, he provides additional food for thought in
  running a financially successful business or even identifying one.
  
  This book is not "Gone with the Wind" or even something you would sit and read in one hour--what book filled with ratios is? But if you are looking for tools that you can apply for the growth of your business or build your financial acuity, then this is it. Even if you have been in accounting for a while, this book is a great reference to have. Shields has taken what you would find in a 1,000 plus page textbook and provided it in less then 200 pages!

  This is a well written and informative guide to accounting principles. I have been in accounting/bookkeeping for over 20 years and this is a wonderful resource for anyone, whether you're new to the field or have been in it for a long time. It is a welcome addition to my virtual bookshelf and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a refresher or a guide to have on hand for reference. Small business owners would benefit from having this book as well; they could learn how to tell if their business is making money and how to read financial reports and use them to make business decisions. Overall great book!

Great reference guide to keep close by for those moments when you need a reminder or have a question and need a quick understanding. Easy to comprehend and thoroughly enjoyed the reference of “accounting ninja” and how to build a toolchest of knowledge. Highly recommend.

• Like most of the Draw 50 books, this one features 50 step-by-step drawings for the reader to follow along and draw his/herself. The results are satisfying. I'd say this one takes things a bit further than the early books, like Draw 50 Animals. There is more shading featured and the birds are a bit more complicated. It's still easy, just not quite as simple as some other Draw 50s. For young children, Draw 50 Animals might be a better choice, as it would be easier to get pleasing results, right away. Older kids and adults can dive into this book and produce some lovely birds that are fun to draw. From backyard birds to tropical birds, there is a large range, here, including a dodo! As with all Draw 50s, there is almost no text (just an intro at the beginning), so be aware that this book may disappoint if you want a lot of written instruction. If you want to grab a pencil and go, this book is for you!
• I was very disappointed. I thought it would be a step by step guide on drawing, but it was just pictures of the birds. If you already know how to draw it might be helpful.
• This is pretty advanced, I was hoping for a book that used more basic shapes to block in the figure before adding all the detail. I didn't learn to draw this way.

• I've used a bunch of different versions of this book, they are a simple way to build from basic shapes and steps to create drawings that you wouldn't think you could make. Excellent for skills and confidence building.
• Interesting, and different insects than many books like this have, but the instructions are not easy to follow. Most of my students return this book unused. ;(
• Use this for self drawing time between projects and students love it. It is a little more complex so most of the interest is at 3rd grade level or above.

• I really like the writing style and layout of this book, and it's one of my go-to favourites whenever I head to the Rockies. It gets to the point quickly, and splits up the sections by "Opinion" and "Facts", which is great as I don't need to try and parse the bits that are important for getting there vs the opinions of the authors. A must-have guide if you're going to be heading to Jasper and Banff for sure.
  
  This is a review of the 6th edition.
• Overall this was a good resource for choosing which hikes to do. However, it isn't perfect. First, it is a book for hikers by hikers - if they say a trail will take you 6-8 hours, it certainly will. If they say it is moderate or strenuous then you will be tired at the end of the day... in fact, I would say that they don't use the strenuous label often enough.
  
  The directions for getting to the trail heads are clear enough, but the included maps could be seriously upgraded.
  
  Sometimes I am a little baffled by the ratings systems... some of their highest-rated hikes were just okay, while some of their mid tier ones offered better scenery.
  
  Overall though, it is a good read.
• "Don't Waste Your Time in the Canadian Rockies," by Kathy and Craig Copeland, bills itself as an opinionated hiking guide to the Banff, Jasper, Yoho, Kootenay, and Waterton Lakes National Parks in western Canada. The Copelands are experienced and obviously very fit hikers who offer their take on worthwhile hikes.
  
  The book is divided into a series of chapters, each covering a hike or area of interlinked hikes. Each chapter offers basic data such as the distance of hikes, elevation change, and a rating for difficulty. The Copeland's rating system of easy, moderate and challenging presupposes at least some level of basic fitness and should be taken seriously with respect to the challenge posed by the terrain and the highly variable weather in the Canadian Rockies. Each chapter includes commentary on the special aspects of the terrain covered by the hike, typically grouped with sketch maps and photos and a recommendation for the appropriate supplemental map.
  
  The Copelands also offer much useful information on the weather, wildlife, and other potential hazards in the Rockies, along with sound recommendations for equipment and trip planning.
  
  The Copelands write in an entertaining style; this author found their opinions on what can be experienced on various hikes to be well-founded, based on several seasons of hiking in the Canadian Rockies. This book is highly recommended to the non-technical but enterprising hiker looking to explore the Canadian Rockies.
• If you're planning an itinerary in the Canadian Rockies and are looking for the best trails for you, this book is perfect. Rather than describe individual trails, it helpfully groups them into "trips". (If you have to hike 20 miles along a boring trail to get to another fabulous trail, the whole trip isn't as fabulous.)
  
  This new edition includes color photos showing many trails' incredible beauty, as well as basic maps that show how the trails link together. You'll probably want to buy a real trail map, but if you're hundreds of miles away planning a trip, the maps in this book are incredibly helpful at figuring out where you might want to hike. Since both long and short trails are included, we also used it during our trip to see where we should stop along the road for a quick gorgeous hike. We had a wonderful vacation using this book.
• I've read a lot of hiking guides my life and agree with the authors of this book that most are banal and are poorly written. This book is an exception to the rule and I think it's one of the best hiking guides that I have ever read and is entertaining too. True, it might not have the best maps, but the hike descriptions and maps in the back of the book are really all you need to have an awesome hike. The authors divide the book into day hikes, backpacks, and shoulder season hikes (out of season hikes where snow plays a big factor). Then the authors rate the hikes premier, outstanding, worthwhile, and don't do. I've hiked 17 of the 21 premier hikes and was not disappointed by any of them. One thing the author's don't suggest is where to camp. If you want to do the premier day hikes, than I would suggest you camp in the Lake Louise Campground, as all but 5 of the hikes are within a 30 mile radius. One of the reviews complained about bear closures and how the book didn't mention that. Well, the book does mention that a lot of the trails do get closed from time to time when there are bears located in the area. So, it doesn't really matter what guide book you buy, there is always the possibility that a trail you want to hike may be closed. And yes, one of the reviewers was right, most of the premier hikes require that you are in good physical condition read the elevation gain and distance to determine whether you are capable of completing the hike. All in all, I'd highly recommend this book to anyone who is planning to hike in the Banff, Jasper, or Yoho Provincial Parks in Canada.
• I've been reading this guide all winter and spring taking virtual hikes in my mind. It's by far the most expensive hiking book I own, but it's also totally worth the money. The photos are beautiful, the trail descriptions tell you everything you need to know, and the segment distances are given in both kilometers and miles. I also own three other hiking guides by the Copelands, and all of them are equally as good. Another benefit is that the authors are always quick to respond to email inquiries with helpful tips and advice about hiking locations or particular trails.
