Adeeb Khalid offers the first extended examination of cultural debates in Central Asia during Russian rule. With the Russian conquest in the 1860s and 1870s the region came into contact with modernity. The Jadids, influential Muslim intellectuals, sought to safeguard the indigenous Islamic culture by adapting it to the modern state. Through education, literacy, use of the press and by maintaining close ties with Islamic intellectuals from the Ottoman empire to India, the Jadids established a place for their traditions not only within the changing culture of their own land but also within the larger modern Islamic world.

Khalid uses previously untapped literary sources from Uzbek and Tajik as well as archival materials from Uzbekistan, Russia, Britain, and France to explore Russia's role as a colonial power and the politics of Islamic reform movements. He shows how Jadid efforts paralleled developments elsewhere in the world and at the same time provides a social history of the Jadid movement. By including a comparative study of Muslim societies, examining indigenous intellectual life under colonialism, and investigating how knowledge was disseminated in the early modern period, The Politics of Muslim Cultural Reform does much to remedy the dearth of scholarship on this important period. Interest in Central Asia is growing as a result of the breakup of the former Soviet Union, and Khalid's book will make an important contribution to current debates over political and cultural autonomy in the region.

"In The Politics of Muslim Cultural Reform Adeeb Khalid focuses on the Jadids, a small group of Muslim intellectuals and the specific vision of modernity that they espoused in their attempts at instituting educational reform under Russian colonial rule. Khalid draws on Bourdieu to argue that culture is a field of contestation where “the definition of what is culturally valuable, as well as the rules of the social game itself are constantly being negotiated by individuals and groups” (Khalid 1998:6). Khalid argues that Jadidism, and the struggle for cultural capital, was very much a response to Russian colonialism, and the terms of the struggle were set by the colonizers themselves: “the social and institutional terrain on which struggles over culture take place in colonial settings is very much a product of colonial rule” (14). Khalid’s approach here has much in common with the work of Jean and John Comaroff (Of Revelation and Revolution) and Partha Chatterjee (Nationalism as a Derivative Discourse). Just as the Comaroffs argue that the colonial encounter in South Africa both constrained and facilitated the eventual demise of apartheid, Khalid argues that it was Russian rule that gave rise to Jadidism, and set the stage for the Central Asian encounter with modernity. Khalid also prefigures later studies of Central Asian nationalism, such as Francine Hirsch’s Empire of Nations, by identifying the influence of colonial ethnography on new conceptions of identity. The creation of the Central Asian republics in 1924 is not seen by Khalid as a Russian divide-and-rule strategy so much as a reaffirmation of Jadid ideas about the boundaries between Turkic and Persian speaking groups."

  • I like the book, and the book was in good shape!

Khalid draws on Bourdieu to argue that culture is a field of contestation where “the definition of what is culturally valuable, as well as the rules of the social game itself are constantly being negotiated by individuals and groups” (Khalid 19986). Khalid argues that Jadidism, and the struggle for cultural capital, was very much a response to Russian colonialism, and the terms of the struggle were set by the colonizers themselves “the social and institutional terrain on which struggles over culture take place in colonial settings is very much a product of colonial rule” (14). The creation of the Central Asian republics in 1924 is not seen by Khalid as a Russian divide-and-rule strategy so much as a reaffirmation of Jadid ideas about the boundaries between Turkic and Persian speaking groups.
  • Adeeb Khalid's work is essentially a chronicle of the ill-fated Jadidist movement of the late 19th and early 20th century, which eventually met its demise during Soviet expansion. The basic thesis that this book puts forward is that Uzbek identity was not merely one which arose as a result of Soviet nationality policies starting in the 1920's but, rather, had its roots in pre-Soviet Central Asian intellectuals such as the Jadidists. This Jadidist movement, moreover, did not arise from Western sources but mobilized ideas recieved from cultural exchanges with other Islamic lands which were the filter through which Western ideas about modern and progress where encountered and are thus to be seen as yet another branch of the Islamic modernist movements of the period.
Particularly strong in this work, and what accounts for it broader significance beyound Central Asian history, is the account, applying the theories of Bourdieu, of the passage of Islamic learning from the pre-modern to the modern period and the concomitant transformations that it implies and the new dynamics which subsequently ensue thereafter. These analyses within the first chapters of the book are surpass even the examination of the 'ulema'in Timothy Mitchell's COLONISING EGYPT.

  • I have been waiting for this book to come, out and I love it! I am an experienced quilter and this book is great for quilters of all stages, even brand new beginner quilters! Lots of patterns and tips!
  • Love this book because you can make all these patterns from small pieces, not just charms.
  • This book is by far the best charm pack themed book I've experienced and enjoyed in a very long time. As soon as my book arrived I was ready to start working one of the quilts. The instructions were excellent and easy to follow. I could go on and on but instead I'm going to suggest that 'you' purchase the book and have the same fun I've been having.
  • This book is amazing! The quilt patterns inside are beautiful and fun to piece! I already made one quilt and am working on two more. The best thing about the patterns is the directions they are excellently written and easy to follow. Another thing I really love about the patterns is that there are fabric options listed in addition to charm packs. Ms. Goertzen is a talented quilter and writer. Grab this book and some charm packs and get quilting!
  • Great book and great patterns. From easy to intermediate. Even though the book is about using charm packs I love how the author includes cuthing instructions for fat quarters or scraps alternatively. It makes the patterns really flexible. You will enjoy this.
  • I really like this charm square book! First, I have to admit to being a charm square collector! I just love these little squares with all the different prints and colors. But I had to stop, I had boxes of them and wasn't sure exactly how I would use them. I didn't want to make an ordinary quilt with the squares all lined up one after another, but I didn't want to make a very time consuming one either, with all the bells and whistles. This book was the solution! There are 18 quilts here, every one very nice. The first one I tried was "Railroad Crossing" on page 30. Extremely simple! And truly delightful when all put together and quilted. Next came Tipsy, page 110. I have made a tipsy quilt or two in the past and found them to be so much fun! You can do anything with this pattern, use any cute print in the middle square of the block. Once I used monkeys in trees and a jungle print for the star points. It was adorable. It may look a bit tricky to beginners, but the steps are laid out clearly and if you follow them one by one carefully, you'll find it's really fairly easy. This book is subtitled "A Beginner's Guide" and I think that's pretty accurate. But old timers will find it to be just as useful. There are a couple of others I'm going to start on soon. On page 76 there's one called Rock Star that uses lots of half square triangles. Great to practice that technique and beautiful when finished. Another is so beautiful. I'm just dying to get to it. Madame Butterfly page 66. A bit more challenging, I think, with many parts. But SO worth it. Delicate and sweet. Any girl of any age would love it. I guess you can see why I gave this five stars. It's one of my favorite quilt pattern/instruction books. I feel sure you'll love it too.
  • I take my scraps that are small enough and cut them into 5" squares. This is a great book for using those or purchased precuts. I purchased the Version and I love it!
  • I bought this for a fellow quilter and ended up buying another for me. I love the quilts in this book and the instructions were easy enough that this beginner could follow.

"Anyone interested in baseball can not fail  to be captivated by Boswell's penetrating look at  the game, and by his graceful  prose."--USA Today

Thomas  Boswell, longtime Washington Post  syndicated sports columnist, has been called  "an astute observer of the human condition disguised  as a first-rate sportswriter." Boswell will  be featured as a major on-screen spokesman in Ken  Burns's PBS series on baseball, which airs in fail  '94 and will attract millions of viewers. His  three previous baseball collections have won wide  praise across the country and sold close to two  hundred thousand copies. In this latest book, Boswell  has handpicked his best baseball pieces of the past  five years to create a collection that will be  must reading for fans across the country. These  pieces, from The Washington Post  and national magazines, are arranged thematically so  there is a narrative flow to the book and cover  everything from Fay Vincent's ouster to Pete Rose's  gambling to the Bo Jackson saga to the return of  Steinbrenner. Another splendid gathering of smart,  witty, beautifully written stories aboutt our  national pastime, Cracking The Show  confirms that when it comes to baseball, Boswell  is in a league by himself. It's a sure hit for the  1995 baseball  season.

"Boswell...is the thinking person's writer about the  thinking person's sport...inexhaustibly interesting  and fun."--George Will

"The title of my review is not hyperbole, as you will find if you read any of Thomas Boswell's fine baseball books ("Craking the Show" is the latest). The book features essays about players, teams, stadiums, season, statistics and Boswell's own unique perspective on the game. For example, Boswell is of the belief that Ted Williams did more damage to the art of hitting than any other player because of his insistance that batters should not swing at the first pitch. Boswell provides ample statistical proof to show that batters who do hit better! This is a great book for anyone interested in the national pastime."

Cracking the Show Thomas Boswell 9780385477130 Books Reviews

  • As described, prompt delivery...Can't ask for more.
  • I have enjoyed reading other works by Thomas Boswell including "Why Time Begins on Opening Day", "How Life Imitates the World Series" and "The Heart of the Order". I found Boswell to be one of the very best baseball writers in America. I guess that's why I was so disappointed in "Cracking the Show". In the aforementioned books, Boswell gives a great and impartial perspective of major league baseball. In "Cracking the Show", he seem to hit nothing but "homers". I realize that Boswell writes from that neck of the woods and it seems logical to write about what you know best. I will also admit that I had a very sincere respect for the Orioles of the late 70's and early 80's when I lived in Milwaukee. As the Brewers were rising to their lone American League pennant, it was the Orioles, not the Yankees, we feared (and respected) the most. Billy Martin was a side show; Earl Weaver was a genius. However, Weaver retired and things changed (boy did they ever for the Brewers!). In his previous books, Boswell was forgiven his occassional excesses of the Robinsons or the Earl of Baltimore because he told us about plenty of other players, teams and events. Indeed, the section that he wrote in this book entitled "Five Octobers" brings his overall genius to enough light so that it enables the rest of us to see it's still there. However, for those of us who failed to recognize that Cal Ripken Jr. (or Sr., for that matter) was the Second Coming, this book is a disappointment. Yes, Ripken is a nice guy and, yes, he was one of the best of his era. However, the emphasis is on ONE of the best; not THE best. He's gotten the record, he single-handedly saved Baseball but through that time he was in ONE, count 'em, ONE post season. Ripken also continued his streak throughout each and every game of the famous 0 for 21 games that the Orioles started the season with in 1988. Many people, myself included, thought that Ripken should have sat at least one of those games after the streak got to double digits. It's called shaking up the team and that's what happened when his own father was fired during the streak. Obviously the son's "streak" was more important than the father's job and reputation. I could go on and on regarding this subject and it usually gets me in trouble. However, consider the example that Ripken set the record for most consecutive All-Star game selections. Keep in mind that there was no All-Star game prior to 1933 so some of the very best missed out on this record. However, does anybody actually believe that Cal Ripken Jr. is the greatest player since 1933? That is, besides Thomas Boswell.

Mr. Boswell seems convinced that the rest of us glory in the Oriole's transformation from the worst team in Baseball to almost clinching the division the very next season. He really talks this up while remaining nonplussed when the Braves and Twins did exactly that a year or so later. I wish I could find the quote where he bemoans the boredom of watching aging veterans chasing down magic numbers such as 500 home runs, 300 wins, or 3000 hits (not to mention 2130 consecutive games). His point was, I believe, that the joy in Baseball is not knowing what will happen next rather than keeping tabs on the inevitable. Still, he does give us some thought-provking essays on Pete Rose and the fall of the commissioner's office.

I guess the point is that we've been spoiled by his previous excellence as a sports reporter with national credentials. Instead of reading like a reporter for the Washington POST, he reads, in "Cracking the Show", like the local sports editor for the Baltimore SUN for too much of the time to make this a book worthy of his talents. Whew!, I'd been holding that in for a long time.
  • This is another solid collection from baseball writer Thomas Boswell. As with the late Red Smith, reading Boswell is a treasure. He describes the 90 feet between the bases with literate, informative, heartfelt prose. This collection remains as readable today as when first printed in the Washington Post from 1989-1993. Boswell focuses on top players like Frank Thomas, Nolan Ryan, Cecil Fielder, Barry Bonds, and Cal Ripken. He examines each World Series played during that time (most exciting Minnesota/Atlanta 1991), and starting with Baltimore's Camden Yards, the coming trend of fan-friendly, retro ballparks of which so many have since been constructed. Nor does Boswell shy from controversy. Readers learn about Pete Rose and his gambling vs. (the late) Bart Giamatti, deposed commissioner Fay Vincent, and the cynical efforts of many baseball owners to precipitate the 1994 strike and break the Player's Union - in time the players narrowly prevailed when the owners were cited for unfair labor tactics. There is also a brief look at Baltimore's now-gone Memorial Stadium, plus the addition of Wild Cards and expanded play-offs.

Some say Boswell over-rates RBI's as they measure opportunity more than productive hitting, and his claim that Cecil Fielder (low OBP, no speed or defense) was baseball's top player was foolish. Still, this is memorable writing. Fans should enjoy this book as much as Boswell's WHY TIME BEGINS ON OPENING DAY, HOW LIFE IMMITATES THE WORLD SERIES, and HEART OF THE ORDER.
  • The title of my review is not hyperbole, as you will find if you read any of Thomas Boswell's fine baseball books ("Craking the Show" is the latest).
