Lead for God Sake! A Parable for Finding the Heart of Leadership Todd Gongwer Urban Meyer Books Reviews

  • Excellent read on the very purpose of leadership, something we all struggle to define. Quite often leadership becomes all about the leader who is in pursuit of power, money, recognition, etc. In reality, you need to have a purpose to serve others and care for those you lead. The same leadership style at Jesus exhibited. Very insightful story about true servant leadership.
  • I bought this on accident with a one click buy and there was a reason while scrolling for other books, it’s a life changing read. If you are in a leadership role or have a teenager ready to take on the world this book should be a requirement. I read books from all types of leadership and can honestly say there is a reason with my current teams situation this landed in my lap.

    Read this for God’s sake.
  • Thus book has helped me see leadership in whole new way. I never wanted to be a leader to be the boss or to organize a crew of people. Im more of the get in and get the work done kind of guy . Ive always felt that to many people think of themselves as leaders and wanting to be the in charge without doing the real work. I now see i can lead without being in charge.
  • I was intrigued by the book because of Urban Meyer. I am a father ,husband, and a high school coach. I have read Urban Meyer's first book called Urbans way and really thought he was crazy! Now I know he is amazing at his job but I also knew that I was not willing to sacrifice my family like his first book entailed. But this year something is totally different about Urban Meyer and I think it stems from this book. He looks at peace and his team looked like a family! I understand why, this book is powerful! It is something I want to lead my future teams by! Congratulations to Urban Meyer ! Your change in coaching style is truly inspiring!!!
  • Finding purpose, then leading from the heart at the beginning of any situation or relationship can change the ultimate outcome of anything. But it will depend on how well you apply it. Here Todd Gongwer takes a simple message wrapped around an interesting story where I found myself in the story at times. How the characters reacted or philosophies they adopted mimicked leadership styles I have used and served under. I can see why this book wins high praise from coaches and leaders in team sports, but it's just as applicable to a single parent, student or office worker. Why? Because we all have a purpose, and finding it is the right first step to moving forward. That's what God wants for all of us.
  • I heard about this book reading an article in the Canton Repository about the impact this book had on Urban Meyer. Urban Meyer is the head coach at Ohio State and while he had achieved the pinnacle of success as coach at Florida he found he needed to let it go for his health and his family. While reading the book in his year off as an ESPN analyst he rediscovered the real reason for coaching and you can see with the Buckeyes he is now coaching from the heart. I think this book is a tremendous resource that distills the core of leadership which is about which is helping people find their purpose and take action to make a difference in the world. By focusing on the journey instead of the destination you can overcome adversity and make the most of each day.
  • I have been very blessed to have a great mentor for the past 15 years. I value this man's advice more than the advice of anyone else. Unfortunately we do not get the opportunity to talk like we used to. A few weeks ago I was discussing some challenges I was having with my job and he recommended this book to me.

It really was just what I needed at that time. Reading the book was like having a long conversation with my mentor. The character in the book, Joe, provides advice much like my mentor. It was really nice having Joe serve as a substitute mentor through the book.

    -Kevin Sochocki
  • Outstanding book. One to keep and revisit periodically. Does a great job of putting life in perspective and think deeper about why we do what we do. Highly recommend this book for anyone. Loaded with life lessons.

About two hundred years ago, largely as a result of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, free trade achieved an intellectual status unrivaled by any other doctrine in the field of economics. What accounts for the success of free trade against then prevailing mercantilist doctrines? And how well has free trade withstood various theoretical attacks that have challenged it since Adam Smith's time? In this readable intellectual history, Douglas Irwin explains how the idea of free trade has endured against the tide of the abundant criticisms that have been leveled against it from the ancient world and Adam Smith's day to the present. An accessible, nontechnical look at one of the most important concepts in the field of economics, Against the Tide will allow the reader to put the ever new guises of protectionist thinking into the context of the past and discover why the idea of free trade has so successfully prevailed over time.

Irwin traces the origins of the free trade doctrine from premercantilist times up to Adam Smith and the classical economists. In lucid and careful terms he shows how Smith's compelling arguments in favor of free trade overthrew mercantilist views that domestic industries should be protected from import competition. Once a presumption about the economic benefits of free trade was established, various objections to free trade arose in the form of major arguments for protectionism, such as those relating to the terms of trade, infant industries, increasing returns, wage distortions, income distribution, unemployment, and strategic trade policy. Discussing the contentious historical controversies surrounding each of these arguments, Irwin reveals the serious analytical and practical weaknesses of each, and in the process shows why free trade remains among the most durable and robust propositions that economics has to offer for the conduct of economic policy.

Project Management for the Unofficial Project Manager A FranklinCovey Title Kory Kogon Suzette Blakemore James Wood Books Reviews

  • I have managed projects large and small over the years, both formally as a PM as well as informally. It's usually not easy, and certainly takes more discipline than most people would think. In order to be successful, I have had to develop my own tips and tricks - or what my peers call "best practices" - which have served me well. Stumbling through some incredibly complex projects created the need for me to develop my skills and it was painful. As a matter of self-preservation, I became an expert on the PMBOK, which helped immensely.

I wish I could have had Project Management for the Unofficial Project Manager years ago. It would have simplified a number of things for me. The basics are all there and simply described. There are well-placed references to PMBOK and other traditional project management staples, which are helpful but not obtrusively academic. This is a practical guide, and would serve all beginning to post intermediate project managers well. It's a well-done book, and if you have interest or need in learning this topic, you should carefully consider buying.
  • This book is fantastic!

Keep in mind its purpose (which is pretty clear, but a reminder). This is NOT for people who want to be true Project Managers with a PMP after their name. This is for the rest of us who often have to wear the PM hat for smaller projects. This is the minimum 20% that I need for 80% of my projects (80/20) rule and it's just the right amount of content. Not too much, but not skimpy either.
  • Superbly written and refreshingly practical. I was hit with four big projects this month and had no idea how I was going to proceed, having no formal project management training. I read through this book in two days and I now feel equipped with the right tools and the right knowledge to succeed. There used to be a marketing campaign in my local market for a men's clothing store whose tagline was "what a difference a day makes". Well in reference to Project Management for the Unofficial Project Manager all I can say is "what a difference a book makes".
  • Project Management for the Unofficial Project Manager uses case studies (storylines) to illustrate application of project management principles elicited in the PMBOK. The magic formula (my term) People + Process = Success. While the book addresses tools and techniques of the five process groups of a project, its emphasis is on leadership and some technical aspects of project management. It offers case studies to underscore the importance of effective communication with stakeholders and addressing their particular interests.

In one of the scenarios, where a company relocation is illustrated, stakeholders range from the company CEO to employees and their families. The company is functionally oriented, and the project manager seeks understanding of the goals from the C-suite, builds a team, deals with the stresses of not having a dedicated team, and contends with scope changes (“scope discovery”—a term identified in the book—vice scope creep).

Along with suggestions for successful interaction among team members and with key stakeholders, the book provides sample templates outlining some communication strategies and for documenting some project related tasks. It is not exhaustive in either of these areas, though it is comprehensive enough to spark creative thinking in project teams.

This reader can relate to the protagonists (project managers), the challenges they faced, their lessons learned, and their successes.

This book is an excellent resource for both the unofficial project manager and the PMP, and I recommend it.
  • Current review
This book is helpful for the newbie, and worth a purchase. It won't give you everything, but it will really help you a lot.

When I bought it I was stuck in the middle of a failing project, and I didn't find this book helpful.

However, with 20/20 hindsight, I realize that the project failure was my fault because I didn't do enough project initiation, project discovery and project planning at the beginning. There were also some problems with disorganized resources on my team, but that's neither here nor there.

I have been using the tools and techniques in this book to success to initiate my projects and also interview stakeholders on project closeouts, as well as other tools. I recommend this book to the unofficial project managers out there who want to grow in their roles.

    Previous review
    Title Surprisingly unhelpful
    Stars 2/5

With the accolades this book has printed on it, you'd think it was the best thing since sliced bread.

I think I know more about project management after being in the trenches for a few months (I'm a career employee, but only recently switching more into project management), being mentored by a few PMPs in my organization and reviewing some PMI-inspired templates.

I haven't finished this book and I'll go back and update if I do, but whenever I jump into a chapter to help me with whatever area I'm having trouble with, I don't find it helpful. We'll see.
  • I felt the book was well written, providing several examples that were carried out through the various stages of a project. I just got assigned to a new project and am looking forward to applying the techniques presented to define success, build teamwork and clarify accountability.
If you are a formal project manager then this may not be the read for you but the elements on team building, respect and open communication may still be of value,
  • If you are looking for "Project Management 101", you have found it. It's a quick, concise read that follows the PMI PEMBOK project management formula but breaks it down into just the essentials. If you are an engineer like me who occasionally has to manage a small project but find yourself thinking "There must be a better way!", this is the book for you.
It's also a great introduction to the PMI methods if you are considering studying for the PMP certification.

Storm King Thunder Dungeons Dragons Wizards RPG Team Books Reviews

  • I'll make this short and quick.

Better DM material in the front of the book, including a flowchart of events, NPC description, an overview of the forces at play in the adventure. Basically everything that was asked for after Out of the Abyss hit the shelves. I'd rate this section a SOLID 10/10. Hope to see the same sort of thing in future prewritten adventures.

The adventure itself is a 9/10. I absolutely love this thing. It's about the same level as Curse of Strahd, if not better. Very very pleased. Well organized - probably the best organized book dropped for 5e besides Lost Mines. And speaking of Lost Mines, there are adventure ties in one of the appendices that let you go nearly seamlessly from the end of one adventure to the other (does not include Curse of Strahd, as one would expect, but most other official 5e adventures are supported). The best of these in my opinion is the link from Lost Mines. Feels like the two books were literally made for each other.

The expanded setting of north Sword Coast is pretty sick, and offers quite a bit of material that I will use for homebrew after the campaign I'm running comes to an end.
  • I am midway thru running this and some pros and cons have become clear. (Spoiler alert, DMs only for what follows.)

The pros are that some of the giant lairs are outstanding -- just super imaginative, with lots of atmospheric detail. For example, the fire giant lair sits below a village of cunning "yakfolk" (half-yak, half human); this must be infiltrated to gain access to an elevator platform that winches down into a subterranean fortress. At the heart of the fortress is the fire giant duke, tossing an iron ball to his hell hounds that contains a roasted dwarf inside; the head of his war hammer is likewise a cage containing a live dwarf begging to be released. There is a slave wheel turned by slaves waiting to be liberated; this wheel drives an enormous loop of buckets on elevated tracks that go round the complex (and provide an interesting means of passage thru the fortress for clever PCs); there is a huge colossus (giant robot thingy) the giants are building to wreak havoc on others, and which the PCs might do well to plunder/destroy. Most of the other giant lairs are also quite good, particularly the stone giant and cloud giant lairs. (Though the cloud giant lair is similar, and probably inferior to, Cloud Giant's Bargain, an excellent side adventure that can be found used and worked into SKT; another good and very short side story that can be found online is Fee, Fly, Foe, Fund, which I used as a prelude to SKT.) Anyway, A+ to Wizards and Chris Perkins on the giant lairs.

But other parts of SKT feel arbitrary and pointless. Three criticisms #1 At three different points in the story, but particularly in the "Savage Frontier" chapter, the PCs are supposed to wander around a vast, vast region, running various errands that are mostly transparent excuses to get them moving around to various towns that require a lot of DM work to populate and roleplay. My players and I got restless and we almost quit the whole thing. If you run SKT, my advice is just pick one additional town for them to visit after the initial giant attack, and then get as quickly as you can to a temple encounter which should lead them quickly to the giant lairs themselves. #2 The PCs are also given a choice about which lair to attack, which is silly because the lairs vary in quality and difficulty, and the PCs have no way to judge which one to attack. This also ends up wasting some pretty good lairs, which go unused; in my game I required the PCs to visit two of them that I selected, plus the storm giant lair, which is where the story climaxes. #3 The storm giant lair, which is crucial to the story and must be visited no matter how you run SKT, is going to need some modification, because there (as written) the characters are basically provoked to undertake an attack that is bound to be disastrous in ways they can't possibly foresee. I am also dubious whether the attack on the dragon at the end of the story is really going to feel that cool.

How does this compare to other 5e adventures? I think Out of the Abyss and Curse of Strahd are clearly better -- more imaginative, more consistent, more immersive and with less of a feel of being just a hack and slay. I like SKT better than Princes of the Apocalypse, which I read and found kind of tedious. But for all these flaws, there's still those giant lairs -- yeah, there's just something classic, so ur-D&D, and so awesome about sneaking into a giant lair, and this is a factor you don't get from COS and OOTA. So I'm glad got SKT, and I'm glad to be playing it. Just wish I'd been more selective in using only the best parts.
  • I've been DMing 5th Edition DnD for nearly 2 years now. I've DMed a few premades (Lost Mines, Out of the Abyss, Curse of Strahd) as well as ran two of my own home-made campaigns (one is still ongoing). I decided to pick Storm King's up to take a break from having to write for my 2nd campaign and to do something different for my group. I'll do my best to be concise about this premade while still getting my point across and with little to no spoliers. I mostly enjoyed DMing Storm King's (which i just completed this week) but felt that it dropped the ball on a few very important aspects of DnD and where players (mine mostly) derive their fun. And because of that, we went from enjoying it early on to wanting to finish it as quick as possible over the last handful of sessions.

    **LIKED**
    - OPENING QUEST
-- It felt fairly organic and gave the group a good reason to stick together. It had some fun fights and some hilarious (and disturbing) imagery for storyline progression.
-- Overall, the 1st chapter of the book gives a great introduction to the story and allows the players to get to know each other's characters while getting a feel for their classes with many combat encounters.

    - NPCs
-- Many of the NPCs have a ton of flavor to them and feel like real people. The book even gives you stat blocks, and personality/bond/flaw aspects for a few of the really important NPCs. Overall, there were very few NPCs that my players just glanced over with a "meh" attitude. They felt invested in most of them and they were well written and structured

    - COMBAT
-- The fights in this premade feel important. None of the encounters felt like filler and even the random encounters could lead to either a side mission or story progression. The boss fights had purpose and some even had some interesting mechanics (like the ability to 1-shot a boss using the environment if your players took the time to investigate the room)

    - COMPLEXITY OF WORLD
The 3rd chapter of this book is almost entirely a list of "what's happening elsewhere in this world" and includes an enormous map of the northern regions of Faerun. If the party decided to run off to some random town, the chapter had exactly what was going on in that town, what was important there, and who they could possibly meet. Then you could fill in the rest with your own artistic license. Even locations without any connection to the story at all were covered so that you could potentially flesh out the world as you see fit.

    **DISLIKED**
    - PACING
-- This was a big one for me and my players. The pacing of Storm King's is meant to allow the players to take their time (the book tells you that you have a year to resolve the plot before the bad-guys win), but the way that it's set up there isn't really a lot to do aside from the plot. So players will mostly just cruise through it. You have to start making your own side missions/quests in order to distract the players from binge running the main-plot.
-- The way that the game ushers in new things it felt like most of the game was combat oriented and not so much time for RP. Most encounters started with combat or were resolved by combat. You have to take a bit of artistic license to allow for RP for the most part. There is time for RP in towns and on the road, but most creatures that you encounter aren't there to talk, they're there to beat you over the head. To get some RP in, I took some liberties with a few of the bad-guys that allowed for my player's to try and talk them down or come to an agreement even if the book told me "this group fights to the death, no matter what." I didn't like that. My players had very little time to grow their characters organically and develop their personalities because they were going into encounters where the opponents were all issues to be solved with force.

    - LEVELING
-- Storm King's does leveling based on milestone leveling (in that there is no experience points, all levels are awarded after predetermined events). I liked the idea but HATED the application. To begin, the players will hit level 5 by the end of the 1st chapter. This is because the start of the 2nd chapter has high CR enemies that could possibly 1 or 2 shot level 5 characters, so anything below level 5 is basically nothing to these creatures. This felt very ham-fisted and heavy handed. My players hit level 4 by the end of the 1st session (about 3-4 hours of play). The players dont have any time to learn their characters, get a feel for their powers, or playout any sort of personality or RP before they are beings beyond normal human comprehension. They go from having trouble fighting a single goblin to being able to level an entire village of people in the span of 1 city and 1 cave. One of my players was playing a plucky wizard who was bullied for sucking at magic when she was in university so she set out to prove herself. And she went from "oh man, how do I cast this cantrip again? uhhh, let me think. Gosh, why am I so bad at this?" to a magical killing machine after about 3 hours of play (and only really killing goblins and a band of disadvantaged orcs). She was unable to get into her character or build on that personality at all.

    - PLOT HOOKS/GOAL/PACING
-- The plot to me was really interesting on paper, with all the giants and dragons and their inner turmoils. But my player's characters had a very hard time getting pulled into the story. Their characters didn't really have a stake in the plot. There was nothing to pull them in. The entirety of their anchor to the plot hinges on them caring about helping out the town's innkeeper on an errand and believing the story of a giant that told them that they were the prophesied "saviors" that a planar entity told him about. The ones that could fix the Giant's issue. That's their hook. They don't have family or friends or their hometowns really involved unless you're lucky that a player is from one of the story towns.
-- The only hook they have to go on is that people ask them to do these things if they have the time to do so. I'm fairly certain if I threw in another side-mission, they would have taken that over the main plot. There's no urgency and no real sense of motivation to do it. Now I get it that there should be an unspoken agreement among the players to help push the story along (which they did), but when they're just pushing the story along out of necessity instead of because they want to, then it starts to feel forced. Near the end of this premade, it was getting bad enough that I inserted some NPCs from another campaign I ran that I knew my player's enjoyed so that they could get a better hold on the plot and their purpose. I also allowed them to fight a boss I made up and gain a few interesting magical items that they thought would be fun. By the end of the premade everyone was ready to get back to doing the home-made campaigns so they could feel more connected to their characters again.

    - CHARACTER POTENTIAL
-- Like I mentioned before, there's no real way for the players to flesh out their characters. They are more so playing generic RPG character #1 rather than their own personally made character. There wasn't any time given for them to grow their character or allow them to experience interesting encounters that give them tough decisions. They go from level 1 to 5 in almost a single session. Those first 5 levels are usually where a player finds their groove, purpose, and life for their character. But this premade skips over that in order to hit 5 ASAP so that the characters don't die immediately to the encounters in Chap 2. I wish my players could have gotten a little more time to get attached to their characters before they're handed level 5.

Revisit Old Friends in Blessing in This Heartwarming Series Conclusion

Deborah MacCallister, head nurse at the Blessing hospital, has loved Toby Valders since her school days, but she's had enough of their on-again, off-again relationship. Toby truly cares for Deborah, but he's never felt like he could commit to marriage or a family.

When Anton Genddarm, the new schoolteacher, comes to town, the young women of Blessing see a chance to force Toby's hand with a little strategic matchmaking. But real sparks fly between Deborah and Anton, and she finds herself in an even more complicated situation. The attention she gets from Anton makes Toby do some serious soul-searching, but is it too late?

Then Deborah receives an invitation to study the latest advances in nursing at a hospital in Chicago, and she faces a hard choice. To leave or stay? Should she give up on the dream of Toby and accept the interest of Anton?

"Having read all of Lauraine Snelling's previous "Blessing" books, I couldn't wait for this latest book to come out. I made the mistake of reading some of the earliest reviews before purchasing it and was a little apprehensive, as the reviews weren't too great. I agree that it might be hard to follow for anyone who was starting from scratch and hadn't read the earlier books, especially in this series. However, after a bit of a slower start than usual, I found the book very enjoyable but maybe not quite up to the standard of some of the earlier volumes. I don't know if there are any more stories planned in this series, but I did not feel that this ended with the sense of not being able to wait for what comes next, as I did with the previous volume."

From This Day Forward Song of Blessing Lauraine Snelling 9780764211072 Books Reviews

  • Having read all of Lauraine Snelling's previous "Blessing" books, I couldn't wait for this latest book to come out. I don't know if there are any more stories planned in this series, but I did not feel that this ended with the sense of not being able to wait for what comes next, as I did with the previous volume.
  • I was really disappointed in this last Song of Blessing book. It just ddn't tie everything together and complete the story. Astrid is finally pregnant but we don't know what she had. Manda and Zeb didn't come back for Deborah's wedding. Manda was her sister and should have been there. They had trains so travel shouldn't have been an issue. The worst was how the Valder storyline ended. I won't say how it ended so as not so spoil it for other readers.. This book just seemed really rushed like "oh I have to finish this set." Really a disservice to the Blessing franchise.
  • This is a wonderful book! It's nice to see Toby Valders being the good guy for a change (he was the "mean kid" in earlier books and often had to chop wood for getting in fights at school, particularly with Andrew Bjorklund), and Deborah finally gets to be the main character (usually she's been a minor character or not mentioned at all). My only complaint is that there are still "mysteries" at the end that don't get resolved, like what happened to Anner Valders, and did Astrid have a boy or a girl? I understand this is supposed to be the last book about Blessing, ND, but I would like to see at least 1 more.
  • This WHOLE series was wonderful. Snelling does an excellent job. The first books were the best of them all from being in the Netherlands to coming to US. One can so identify with the characters and incidents with blizzards and out breaks there is some historical bases. She did a good job of researching how things were done in the olden days and how things changed as the years went by. I was disappointed in the last book. It was to predictable and bit a of let down.
  • I fell in love with the Bjorklands in the very first book and cried along with them in tragedy and strife. The people of Blessing have become my family through the years. Every year I have waited for the new book to come out so that I can catch up with the town and now there won't be another one. I am bereft. Thank you, Lauraine Snelling, for bringing this town and these wonderful people to life. I will miss them tremendously!
  • Once again Lauraine Snelling does not disappoint. As with her entire Red River Valley series she makes you feel like the characters are people you would like to be friends with. Even though her books are fiction her characters seem like they truly are the people who homesteaded this region of North Dakota. I hope she will continue to tell the story of Ingeborg Bjorklund and all the other inhabitants of Blessing, North Dakota. I am not ready for this story to end.
  • I am sorry to see the end of this series, but glad to have gotten to know these wonderful people. Just like real life, there are pieces we will never find out about in this life, but the message to trust God and keep praying is valid for us all.
This is Deborah's story. All her friends want to help her find love and a home, and all the plots and plans that result remind me that no one can change a man but God and the man himself.
  • Great book! Please Lauraine, keep the blessing books keep coming! hint, hint....how about a future with Ingaborg and David Gould?

Stopping the Noise in Your Head the New Way to Overcome Anxiety and Worry Dr Reid Wilson PhD 9780757319068 Books Reviews

  • This review is long due (well it can’t be that long due if the book came out a month ago), long due in a way that it needs to be on the site visible to people who are suffering from anxiety and are contemplating to buy this or not. My best advice? BUY THIS NOW, IN AUDIO FORMAT. RIGHT NOW. I have been suffering from OCD since age of 17. I’ve been in inpatient programs, the one I went to was regarded as the best in America. I went through years of doing better, had some relapses, and then was able to pick myself back up every time using exposures exercises and the things I’ve learned from the program, without medications (I have tried 17 medications and none of them helped). In 2013, I had a major relapse and not even exposures were working and I went on the drug Memantine (the 18th drug I’ve tried) and it worked amazingly for 2.5 years. Unfortunately, this February of 2016, I have another major relapse. This time, I believe, the Memantine has “pooped out”. I resumed the exposure exercises from 1 hour per day to two hours a day with no avail. I went to OCD support sites and people only responded with statements such as “you must be not doing exposures right” or “you are not working hard enough”. I knew I was doing it right and I was working super hard because I was able to get out of all the prior relapses before 2013 doing exposures. I was devastated and hopeless. Memantine and exposures were my only tools to beat OCD and neither of them were working. I have been following Dr. Reid’s videos and books over the years and I’ve always gained insights from his work, and when I heard his new book was coming out, I placed an early kindle order before it even came out. By May, I got an email saying I can now have access to it. I was nervous, what if it’s stuff I already knew? What if I’m wasting another $14 on something I could have googled myself? Most importantly, am I going to be disappointed? I read the first 3 chapters on , and immediately, I bought the audio version so I could listen to it before bed, when my intrusive thoughts are the worst. Dr.Reid made it very easy to understand what are the steps to get out of the never-ending torture cycle. This book is not ERP-heavy like other OCD books, which works for me since exposures haven’t work for me in the past few years. (worked for 10 years prior, and I have no idea why exposures stopped working ) Instead, it really focuses more on moment-by-moment and constant vigilance in living with OCD. This book made me, someone with PURE O, who ruminates on every intrusive thoughts realize that no matter how much exposures I do, if I do not respond appropriately when an intrusive thought arise, then all exposures done will surely be wasted; and that’s why exposures haven’t been working, because I am not responding with the right tactics when thoughts arise. For people who are suffering Pure O, the VERY true exposures are done are when the intrusive thoughts hit. Exposures exercises are great, but scripts are written up; it’s how you react when the intrusive thoughts hit that really matters. By responding correctly and using “right tactics”, I can not explain it thoroughly here since it will take pages but you can buy the book and find out ', but I can briefly shorten it Exposure response prevention is important, but without the right attitude and tactics, the feelings of uneasiness will linger. (Those with Pure O definitely know what I mean). After reading this book, I have come to believe that to beat OCD, it should be Exposure Response Prevention with Excitement and Desire, instead of just Exposure Response Prevention. I have went from ritualizing from every second of the day to only 1 hour a day from using what Dr. Reid suggested. All his suggestions are backed up my scientific studies. When you are like me and had nothing to lose, you will try anything. I trusted Dr. Reid and I followed what he suggested diligently and my decrease of hours in ritualizing is the result of reading/listening to this book. Even though I am just N=1, I am positive that this can help others. You can suffer less, “Exposure Prevention with Excitement and Desire”, sounds bizarre but it will make sense after you are done with this book. Good luck. No one needs to suffer (that bad).

AddendumThis book is NOT specifically for just OCD, it covered different kinds of anxiety issues. My review made it seem it's only for OCD, it's not.
  • I have been dealing with panic attacks well over 10 years now, to the point where they are a daily occurrence. I was panicked about panicking... This books makes no sense at all - BUT THAT'S THE POINT! It's a paradox - the more you panic about panicking, the more your panic. (I know how silly that sounds.) But READ THE BOOK and you'll get it. I am working with the "tools" provided in the book and have been almost completely panic free for 2 weeks. (That's a new record for me.) If you suffer from panic, anxiety disorder, whatever, do yourself a favor and read this book. Trust me on this, I still go to therapy and it helps, I still take a very low dose of medication and it helps, but my breakthrough came with the suggestions provided in this book. And part of my panic disorder is physical, in that I have to deal with histamine intolerance, so my histamines are always ready to rage... and once they do that, it signals my brain to have a panic attack. The methods in this book work! For over 10 years, I have been poring over the internet, researching constantly, keeping a diary of foods eaten, smells that set me off, things that frighten me and have seen so many doctors - all with just some small amount of benefit. But my therapist recommended I really look into "mindfulness" and it led me to this book. I can't even begin to describe the relief it has brought me. So, if you know panic, like I know panic, you will read this book and give these methods a try.
  • I recently discovered I was living with OCD for the past 16 years or so, starting when I was around 10. It could best be described as intrusive thoughts and pure o mostly centering around existential themes, but I've also had bouts of relationship OCD, harm OCD, etc. I had always managed it, either via compulsions or trying my best to ignore and avoid confronting my thoughts, but eventually it got worse. I mustered up the courage to talk to my friends, family, and a professional when it got bad recently. Although talking to a professional has helped, ultimately treatment is up to each individual personally. This book has been the biggest factor in my OCD recovery. Dr. Wilson incorporates a no nonsense attitude throughout this book. His honesty, humor, and compassion really helps you relate to everything he says, almost like he is there with you to guide you each step of the way. What stands out most to me is how he understands how difficult this process of getting over anxiety can be and never sugar coats it. He relates to the reader via humor and a matter-of-fact way of writing that sounds like you are talking to a good friend. I can't count the number of times the words on the page that illustrated specific doubts, fears, and insecurities were the exact same that were in my head. Dr. Wilson truly understands what it is like to deal with OCD and anxiety, and how stepping forward without knowing what is going to happen, and being completely uncertain about the outcome, can be so difficult for so many of us. However, with his guidance throughout the book, he explains how we can fight through these feelings by having a sense of grit and courage, and not pushing these feelings aside, but WANTING them and welcoming them, facing them head on despite our fear. This book not only will help you deal with anxiety and OCD, but will give you a new perspective on your life and how you may have been dealing with things prior. I'd recommend anyone read this book, even if anxiety or OCD is only a minor concern in your life, as I think it has great value as a guide on how to take back control of your own life regardless of your circumstances.
  • This book is not your typical OCD/Anxiety related book that just tells you what you should do to do to get "better". This book is all about changing your attitude about your anxiety!! It teaches you to take a big step back and look at the whole picture, then give you techniques to face and conqueror your fears. The use of analogies really helped me put so many things I was confuse about into perspective.
    Thanks Dr. Wilson!

My Invisible Husband Urban Soul Presents Shelia M Goss Books Reviews

  • As I started reading this novel, one of the first things I noticed was the author's almost zero use of swearing and completely no explicitness. Nikki and Byron's first "time" together (after all was said and done) wasn't even dialogued or mentioned but it was definitely safe to assume. The author's tasteful style of writing was definitely a refreshing change. I never understood why Byron didn't tell Nikki his secret, but at the same time his love for her was genuine by the words he spoke and his actions towards her. Nikki was a very likable character with a good head on her shoulders and a heart of gold. Their marriage charade was priceless .I enjoyed reading about the character Tara. The office environment was easy to relate to. The ending definitely surprised me. I'd like to read more from this author.
  • OMG, I loved this book, I read it in a couple hours. I could not put the book down at all. Big ups to Sheila Goss for writing such a great book '
  • WOW, this was a great read, filled with a story, you want to read for pleasure! Now could this actually happen in real life? You decide.
  • Nicolette "Nikki" Montana has everything a single female wants - the dream job, comfortable home, sports car, shapely figure, and a personality everyone loves. The one thing she doesn't have is a husband. Nikki is sick and tired of people asking when she is going to settle down and get married. She wants to take back her life and be able to focus on herself and take her job to the next level. After careful deliberation she decides to sneak off and marry an "invisible husband" in Las Vegas. Nikki has it all planned out until she meets Byron.

In this game of charades she fools everyone. Her co-workers plan her a bridal shower, family set up a welcome home congratulations dinner, and her girlfriends arrange a bachlorette party. In a feverish rush to cover all the lies she has told, she decides to let Byron in on the "invisible husband" story. Byron buys into it so he can be closer to Nikki. The one thing he fails to reveal is his psycho ex-girlfriend, Tara. Does Bryon really love Nikki or is he trying to get back at Tara?

My Invisible Husband flows quickly from one scene to the next, entertaining the reader with comic relief and "no she didn't" thoughts. Even though the entire story is based on a lie, morality is the lesson learned. The character development and interaction was down-to-earth while the story line did have areas that were a bit unbelievable. There are a few grammatical errors and confusion surrounding Nikki's name (Nicolette doesn't show up until page 55). My Invisible Husband is drama filled and certain to keep you reading.

Reviewed by M. Bruner for Loose Leaves Book Review
  • My Invisible Husband, by talented author Sheila M. Goss, is one of the best books I have read this year!

Our heroine, Nikki Montana, has painted herself into a corner with little means of escape. Frustrated with the tiresome remarks from family and friends regarding her single lifestyle, she concocts a bogus wedding and marriage. Thus, enters her "black knight" in shining armor, the handsome Byron Matthews. He falls for Nikki and agrees to keep the masquerade going. Round and round these two go, as their love and their lies grow deeper and deeper.

I found this book hard to put down. In fact, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. It was a story that I never wanted to end. The author takes her readers on a wild ride that is both fun and exciting! I never knew what to expect next.

As Nikki begins to realize her feelings for Byron, she is then faced with accepting his hidden past. It's a tangled web that the reader almost enjoys at the expense of the characters involved. I am still waiting for the other shoe to fall. You will, too, believe me!

Sheila M. Goss knows how to keep her audience on the edge of its seat. This is a book that I highly recommend. Let the games begin!

Armchair Interviews says Wow, what a great book.
  • You know how you've been waiting for something for so long and when you finally get it, it turns out to be a BIG disappointment? Well that is what My Invisible Husband was for me. I didn't care for Nikki's character. For me she started out okay, but then she would just kind of flash. On 1 hand she was crying about everything at the drop of a dime and then on the other hand, she was going off on someone. She also seemed to give mixed messages to Byron when they were close. Byron seemed to be cool at first but then he became kind of lame. The way he handled the whole Tara situation.... I don't even have the words. Her sister Adrienne?? Where did she come from? I understand Nikki not wanting everyone in her business, but when you are going off on your best friend telling her to stay out of your business, that for me is a bit much. It's your best friend and if you don't want her in the business dont tell her anything.
I thought the plot was a great idea. But once the plane landed, the story should have too.
  • Nikki Montana is a single 34-year-old account executive that is tired of her family pressuring her about getting married. Nikki decides to fake a Las Vegas wedding to please her family. On her return trip to Dallas, Nikki meets the sexy Byron Matthews on the plane. She is already too caught up in her web of deceit and now everyone wants to actually meet this mysterious new husband. Not having any other options, Nikki enlists the help of Byron to play as her husband. Will Byron go along with Nikki's crazy plan or will he just walk away?

My Invisible Husband is a widely entertaining novel by Shelia M. Goss. Goss brought a unique and fast-paced storyline. I loved the drama and the humor in this novel. Some of the dialogue had me laughing out loud. This story will definitely have readers flipping the pages. My Invisible Husband is delightful and uproariously funny.

Savage Worlds Deluxe Explorer Edition S2P10016 Shane Hensley Books Reviews

  • I GMed Pathfinder for a group of college guys and a gal until they gained ninth level, after which I became a little disenchanted with the constant rules-digging. As none of us felt inclined toward DnD 4.0, we picked this up, and I have become totally sold on it.

As a GM, what I ESPECIALLY appreciate
+Making NPCs or creatures is a breeze, allowing for much more time spent on the plot, cool settings, etc.

+The system is elegantly simple, and can easily accommodate any genre or action. (My players prefer it for all genres except medieval fantasy, but acknowledge it does fine there, too; they just prefer Pathfinder for that, and are psyched to be playtesting DnD Next.)

+Players aren't pigeon-holed into classes, but can choose to follow an archetype if they desire. (Oddly, some of my players DO like Pathfinder's/DnD's forced specialization.) With Savage Worlds, there's also such freedom in designing characters to fit a particular protagonist from books or movies, and anyone can be meaningful, which is emphatically FALSE for many other systems.

+Anyone can die quickly. Granted, this isn't what all players are looking for, but I find that this keeps players grounded and exploring options other than combat (or at least, mindless whacking) when things get dicey. They actually consider ducking and employing sound tactics from time to time!

+The game is designed to be kept flowing without too much prep before OR paperwork during the game session. I love not having to keep track of hit points or many different short-term effects. This aspect has freed me up to enjoy the game as much as my players. (Admittedly, some of my players HATE not having hit points; it frustrates them to score an apparently-solid hit, only to find that that hit only skids off armor or traces a scratch down a villain's thigh. They accept it, but enjoy bemoaning the situation.)

    +On-line support is without peer.

Long and short, I haven't found a system that better combines cross-genre playability, adaptability, efficiency, and sheer enjoyment, nor one that comes close.
  • Having played ADnD 2.5 for many years, I took a break and came back to a Pathfinder Campaign. About a year later a friend called and said he wanted to try to run a Cyberpunk Savage World's campaign. I was hesitant at first to try to learn an entirely new rules system, so I bought this book to learn the basics.

I was very surprised at the simplicity of the rules and the open ended method of character creation. You really could build your character into just about anything the campaign accommodates. I wanted to play a combat medic type... the archetypes were doctor or ex military but with the simplicity of the game rules, I was able to easily build the exact character I had in mind. I also liked that there was a lot less math involved in this game system because it allowed me to bring in people who hadn't played PnP games before and they were able to very easily pick up on the system structure.

Any DM (or GM) can easily make this as simplistic or complex as they desire, but there is a lot of freedom in this structure that I really enjoyed. I still love my old ADnD books, and Pathfinder - but Savage Worlds allowed us to run a high energy combat focused game that was an absolute blast.

The book itself was highly detailed and contained excellent artwork. I found that everything was explained in enough detail that even those who had never played before were able to pick up the concepts very quickly.
  • If you want to get someone into RPGs and want to keep it simple, but don't want to pay for multiple rules bloated books like Pathfinder, etc. This is your game. It's a Core system for less than $10. No additional supplements needed, though of course you can always buy them if you like different settings. Only other things you need is a pack of playing cards, pennies or something to use as tokens for bennies, and a set of standard polyhedral dice and you are good to go. Very GM friendly with little prep time. Very player friendly, easy to learn. Fast Furious and Fun!

As a side note to learn about Savage Worlds, visit the Jerrod Gunning channel on YouTube, where they have a Weekly Wednesday Savage GM Hangout. There are LOTS of videos (at least 2+ years worth) of different topics on how the mechanics, settings, etcetera work....
  • I have been roleplaying for a long time either playing in or game mastering a number of titles such as D&D 2nd Edition, 3e, 3.5, White Wolf's Vampire the Masquerade and Werewolf the Apocalypse, Palladium's Rifts, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Crafty Games SpyCraft 2.0, Mutants & Masterminds and more.

In my younger days, I enjoyed very crunchy, detailed rulesets that covered everything and a player's handbook with 300, 400 or even 500+ pages (like Pathfinder) was acceptible to me. But as I got older, I really started looking at the combat systems, most notably the D20 System after a single dragon fight took more than an hour to complete with a well geared, highly skilled party. I wanted something faster that still covered most situations and that is when I discovered Savage Worlds. The system does a wonderful job with balancing the rules against the storytelling, offers players a chance to be truly heroic while roleplaying their characters and adds to the story instead of having to whittle down hundreds of hit points. It also has a sense of real danger to the characters because even the lowest of creatures can get a really lucky shot and kill them. It is rare but it can happen. Plus Savage Worlds covers a huge variety of genres so if the group wants to switch from fantasy to futuristic, post apocalyptic, gothic horror or superheroes, Savage Worlds has it covered. This is a huge bonus for anyone that gets tired of having to learn new rule systems every time they want to play something different.

Growing Up Duggar Jana Duggar Jill Duggar Jessa Duggar Jinger Duggar 9781451679205 Books Reviews

  • I know not many people like the Duggar family. Many think that they are extremely strict due to their religious leaders. I, however, I believe a lot of the things that they do as well. I found this book and very enlightening to how the family works. It challenged me and made me self reflect on how I go about things. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, especially young women who are looking for direction on how to live a pure lifestyle.
  • My daughters love this book and it is teaching them how to be godly young women and how to stay modest and a time such as this ! They are 11,12. 😍🙌🏼
  • I bought this for my great nieces and didn't read but a small part of the book. I've never seen the tv show but I'm sure it is an excellent book.
  • You young ladies are beautiful inside and out. I loved reading this book and hearing all the stories, as I read the book or watch you and your family on television I find myself trying to be a better mom all the time. of course you girls are not moms yet you do have such adult roles in helping with the little ones and I think that's wonderful. This book has inspired me to get my family back into going to church, thank you so much!!!
  • I have read it twice now I love the book and would recommend this to any mother or teen (even boys?). I think this book can be a great food for thought to help those making choices about their lives. In the world we live in I think we need to think long and hard about how we are living our lives and raising our children even if our end goal is not to have 19 kids or engage in courtships.
  • Enjoyed reading about the older Duggar girls' family life. It got tiring toward the end, as was slightly repetitive.
  • Lots of good ideas in this book. I can't agree with all of the things. You kind of have to pick and choose what works for you. It is ice to read something about manners, and living a loving life.
They are a bit overboard with views on music, movies and books. It seems like they think you will practically be viewing porn if you read a romance novel or fashion magazine.
  • This was a gift. Very good value and would recommend this book and seller both.
