The pall that had descended over the North is gone, and a new day has dawned on a victorious Mithral Hall, but no matter how bright things seem on the surface, Drizzt and his companions know that what lurks just under their feet remains steeped in evil and charged with unimaginable power.

The dark elves of Menzoberranzan, including the powerful Archmage Gromph, aren't done with Drizzt yet. And consumed by their own power struggles, feeling backed into a corner, the drow may just be desperate enough to call on demonic forces from the deepest reaches of the Abyss, and unleash a disaster even the Underdark could never have prepared for.

Archmage has everything Drizzt's fans crave action, adventure, characters that resonate with equal measures of warrior spirit and deep compassion, and no shortage of wicked dark elves!

"Gromph is a character to be taken seriously. I have read every Drizzt book I can get my hands on and have enjoyed them all. The original series are still by far my favorites but as Salvatore expands the characters around him, I am still hooked. I highly recommend these and that you start from the beginning so you can be as invested in these characters as I am."

Archmage Forgotten Realms RA Salvatore 9780786966134 Books Reviews :

Archmage Forgotten Realms RA Salvatore 9780786966134 Books Reviews

  • This book had the potential to be great, but once again falls to the trappings of R.A.'s latest books of slowly building the plot and then rushing the ending. A lot of questionable things happened with the main character and others at the end, but as a reader I feel like I'm being hushed and moved along at breakneck pace to the ending. That's not to say it's not a good book. It's great for 3/4 of the way, and a real page turner that is often hard to put down. Looking forward to the next book.
  • No spoilers here but I will say the following good read, much improved over some previous half-hearted attempts that Bob allowed to be published under his name. Good overall story development and foundation setting for multiple new story lines. Bob cut corners, however, and completely failed to develop some obvious / exciting characters and plot transition points which weakened the book. I have read ALL of the Drizzit tales since first published years ago and continue to be frustrated by RAS blind spots on obvious / exciting character development for no apparent reason. All that said, I look fwd to the next book and am cautiously optimistic for Gromph!!!
  • I love this series. It's written from the perspective of someone who clearly loves playing D&D and the story unfolds much like a great campaign. It's a bit character-centric (the main character Drizz't is a bit of a 'mary sue' type) but otherwise it's full of interesting characters, plots, action, and adventure. Perfect for ages 13+ and anyone who loves adventure.
  • I read some RA Salvatore decades ago as a teen-ager and was not impressed. I thought he was a competent but uninspiring writer, certainly
not in the same league as the "heavies" like Tolkien, Moorcock, Tad Williams and George RR Martin.
This book I picked up because of so many glowing reviews, and because it featured the Drow so prominently (a society I find fascinating).
Well I was not dissapointed. The book reads like runaway freight train -- fast paced and not a dull moment. The Drow really are the
star attraction. I mean this is a race of creatures that hate themselves almost as much as they hate other races. So how does such a
society function? Through fear, intimidation, constant scheming and unholy alliances, that's how. It's engrossing stuff.
Can't wait to read the next in the series. If you are a fantasy lover, I cannot recommend this book enough.
  • Have always been a fan of this author and was surprised. For the 3rd time in my life and first time with this author after about 150 pages I’d had enough and set this confusing mess aside.

Perhaps I just tired of little focus on Drizzt and instead the focus on Chaos in the Drow world but I can sum it up in I just did not care.

The author seriously wasted my time and money. I just cancelled the other 2 books in this set and a pre-order. Very disappointing.
  • The book goes off on some really weird tangents in regards to marriage and being faithful, the author would be a lot better off sticking to the genre. I had to skip that whole section as it felt like I was reading something from a demented idiot. Marriage is simple, stick with your partner... what else needs to be said. Aside from that, the book is good.
  • Gromph is a character to be taken seriously. I have read every Drizzt book I can get my hands on and have enjoyed them all. The original series are still by far my favorites but as Salvatore expands the characters around him, I am still hooked. I highly recommend these and that you start from the beginning so you can be as invested in these characters as I am.
  • The war in the Silver Marches is over and the dwarves battle to reclaim Gauntlygrym while chaos reigns in Menzoberranzan as Abyssal demons walk the streets. After what I refer to as "the dark years" of the Spellplague and its aftermath in the Transitions trilogy and the Neverwinter Saga quartet, RA Salvatore returns with "Archmage" and Drizzt and the Companions of the Hall have never been in better form. This is Drizzt, Bruenor and Cattie-brie at their finest.
