- This is a must read for petroleum engineers. I suspect that it is actually a required or recommended text for many petroleum engineering University courses. Regardless of whether this is required by your grad school, most petroleum engineers who will be working in the field could benefit from having this manual on a work space bookshelf. The author presents material well and concisely, so that the engineer can get right into the core material. The topics covered are thus

Granted that the information contained within is what I would consider advanced engineering, it is what one should expect from a technical text for petroleum engineers. I would think most engineers would have a firm grasp of organic chemistry, bio chemistry, and upper level mathematics (Calc 1 at the least - differentials probably preferred). It would be above the heads of many undergrads or those in the field that are not engineering grads (those in the management and business departments... though I wouldn't think an accountant for an offshore drilling development firm would be reading these texts).
The most useful sections in my opinion were the last few chapters (optimization, emissions, and residue and feedstock processing as well as the quick reference appendices). Even if you are familiar with installing and operating FCC equipment, these final chapters give some interesting notes for troubleshooting, maintaining, and optimizing the equipment. Plus the appendices are handy reference to refer to.
This is all material that I that anyone installing or operating FCC equipment should be familiar with. I expect that instructors or employers will have their particular preference as to which author and publisher presents the best approach for learning this material. I believe this text is well worth it for the experience that Sadeghbeigi brings, and it is current as of Jan 2012 - a nice feature of the 3rd edition. - Fluid Catalytic Cracking Handbook, Third Edition An Expert Guide to the Practical Operation, Design, and Optimization of FCC Units is an accessible text on a relatively complex topic. More than just an overview text, this is a practical guide to operations. It also includes in-depth reviews of common equipment from physical and mechanical perspectives. It allows the reader to learn and master the technical theory and best practices of petroleum refining using fluid catalytic cracking.
The book covers the history and theory of FCC as well as outlining the most prevalent designs for FCC units. While cracking is a complex process, the author makes it accessible by breaking it down and explaining it step by step. And early on, the book also includes flow diagrams to put the FCC process in the proper context of the typical refinery operation. And the book also emphasizes the frequent adjustments that go hand-in-hand with changing feedstock requirements. This includes both theoretical and practical review of hydrocarbons, from both their chemical and physical properties.
The troubleshooting and optimization sections of this book also present the activities necessary to repair and improve refining of oil and gas products. There are examples throughout the text designed to help engineers think of the process in terms of increased yields and process efficiencies. Appendices are provided to augment the information in the handbook with commonly used reference tables and materials.
CONCLUSION
Engineers and operational refinery professionals will benefit from this book's simplified treatment of fluid catalytic cracking. This book also covers ancillary topics from chemical and mechanical engineering perspectives. The author's plain language explanations will make this a book that even non-engineers turn to for insight into this topic. I recommend it.
Enjoy. - One is always hesitant to invest in a new edition. How much has been changed? Is it even worth the investment? Here are some thoughts on this text (in general) and on the updated edition
Pros
-Clear, concise writing. (I never had to reread a single sentence for the sake of clarity).
-Entirely professional. (No attempts at awkward humor/professional humor and no tangents).
-End of chapter summaries that provide a useful opportunity for the reader to review.
-Extraordinarily thorough. (This is thirty-five years of experience in a single text).
-Completely updated since the second edition and an entirely new chapters on refractory lining, residue cracking, and flue gas emissions.
-Intensely proof-read. (The author notes that each chapter was "reviewed carefully for accuracy and completeness."(xii). I did not locate a single error).
-An extensive glossary.
-A thorough appendix.
Potential Con
-Though the in-text figures/illustrations provided are somewhat "artless," they easily accomplish their purpose. For me, this was entirely acceptable. However, there was a figure in the appendix which was difficult to view Temperature Variation of Liquid Viscosity (325). This is the only potential problem that I encountered with the entire text.
So, is it worth the investment? Considering the massive overhaul to an already exemplary text, I would say that this is money well-spent. You will not regret purchasing this new edition.
